# Chappie James Vietnam Briefing

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 22:** Level Flight – Build Faith into Life
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter closes Section II by building faith into life. Dean turns from James 1 to a combat memory that became his framework: a pre-mission briefing with Colonel Chappie James’s F-4 world. This lesson holds only the setup — who, where, and why he listened so hard.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s attention after recent deaths mirrors wisdom’s call to learn before you fly again. Scripture honors sober readiness and instruction received in danger.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Paid close attention after recent losses | The wise hear and increase in learning (Proverbs 1:5); it is better to hear the rebuke of the wise (Ecclesiastes 7:5) |
| Orientation that becomes lifelong memory | Bind them on your heart; keep them (Proverbs 6:20–23); remember the days of old (Deuteronomy 32:7) |
| Mission into unfriendly places still requires prep | Be watchful, stand firm in the faith (1 Corinthians 16:13); put on the armor of God (Ephesians 6:11) |

## Dean's excerpt

### First mission north

I often like to remember a briefing I heard when I was in Vietnam. Our forward air control unit supported an F-4 unit on a regular basis, and I was invited to fly with that outfit on a mission with Colonel Chappie James. Colonel James had a stellar reputation from WWII, Korea, and now Vietnam. He was a Tuskegee Airman and the first rated four-star African-American general officer in the United States Air Force. The man was an icon of the modern fighter pilot generation.

Our mission would take us to areas that were very unfriendly. I was there as a guest of the unit because of my job. It was my first mission up to North Vietnam, and the squadron I was going to fly with had lost two guys the day before so I paid close attention in the pre-mission briefing. This was an orientation flight, but one that was important to me, and a mission that I long remembered.

> **Scholar sidebar — Listen while the losses are fresh**
> Proverbs 1:5 and Ecclesiastes 7:5 honor attentive hearing. Deuteronomy 32:7 and Proverbs 6:20–23 press lasting memory of instruction. Dean’s setup is not name-dropping alone — two empty seats yesterday made the briefings stick for a lifetime of level flight.

## Takeaways

1. **Memory with a name.** Chappie James — Tuskegee Airman, combat icon, later four-star.
2. **Guest status.** FAC support role put Dean in another unit’s cockpit for orientation.
3. **Unfriendly air.** First trip north was not a sightseeing hop.
4. **Two lost yesterday.** Grief and risk sharpened attention in the brief.
5. **Lifelong deposit.** Orientation became a mission he long remembered — and taught.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
As a FAC guest on an F-4 mission with Colonel Chappie James’s unit — first time into North Vietnam after two losses the day before — Dean paid close attention to a briefing he never forgot.

### Why does the setup matter?
Because the next lessons’ “strap it on” and “learn from every mission” only land if you feel the cost of not listening.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Proverbs 1:5** — Wise hear and learn.
- **Ecclesiastes 7:5** — Hear the wise.
- **Proverbs 6:20–23** — Bind instruction on the heart.
- **Deuteronomy 32:7** — Remember the days of old.
- **1 Corinthians 16:13** — Watchful; stand firm.

### A simple practice
Recall one briefing, sermon, or hard conversation you only heard because loss was fresh. Write the two points you still carry — then check whether you still live them.
