# Faith Standard Before You Stand

**Author:** Dean Rush

## Context for the Reader

This chapter closes Section II by building faith into life. Dean carries uniqueness into the corporate world: a director’s line in a down market becomes a “faith standard” — own your value before crisis forces you onto someone else’s.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s workplace story still sits under God-given worth and diligent excellence. Scripture warns against unstable borrowed foundations and calls for wholehearted work.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Establish a standard of value before standing on someone else’s | Build your house on the rock (Matthew 7:24–25); if the foundations are destroyed (Psalm 11:3) |
| Develop uniqueness; be the best you can be | Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord (Colossians 3:23); do you see a man skillful in his work (Proverbs 22:29) |
| God rewards uniqueness and loves your value | Each will receive his wages according to his labor (1 Corinthians 3:8); He cares for you (1 Peter 5:7) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Before you stand on someone else’s

During my years in the corporate world I was privileged to have several great experiences managing companies. The people I worked with and for taught me a lot about success. I once heard one of our respected directors say during a difficult financial period in a down market, “Believe in yourself and establish a standard of value for life before you have to stand on someone else’s.” That director was saying you have to establish a “faith standard” in yourself and your work. Your uniqueness is worth developing to its ultimate value. Let me state that another way: “Be the best you can be,” to use the phrase of the U.S. Army recruiters. God will reward your uniqueness. He loves the value that you represent. If He did that for me, He will do it for you.

> **Scholar sidebar — Own the standard early**
> Matthew 7:24–25 and Psalm 11:3 press foundations before the quake. Colossians 3:23 and Proverbs 22:29 honor skilled, wholehearted work. Dean baptizes a boardroom line as faith standard: develop God-given uniqueness before crisis makes you borrow someone else’s values.

## Takeaways

1. **Down-market wisdom.** Hard markets reveal whose standard you stand on.
2. **Faith standard.** Belief applied to self and work — not only Sunday talk.
3. **Develop uniqueness.** Ultimate value is cultivated, not assumed.
4. **Best you can be.** Excellence is response to worth, not ego theater.
5. **God rewards.** He loves the value you represent; the offer extends to you.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
A director taught him to set a life standard of value — a faith standard in self and work — before crisis forces you to stand on someone else’s, because God rewards developed uniqueness.

### Why before the crisis?
Because when markets and lives drop, borrowed standards collapse under you.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Matthew 7:24–25** — House on the rock.
- **Colossians 3:23** — Work heartily as for the Lord.
- **Proverbs 22:29** — Skillful in work.
- **1 Corinthians 3:8** — Wages according to labor.
- **1 Peter 5:7** — He cares for you.

### A simple practice
Write your current “faith standard” in one paragraph: what you will not abandon in self and work when pressure rises. Compare it to any standard you have been borrowing.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What is a faith standard? What did the corporate director say? How does God reward uniqueness?*
