# Hebrews Faith Assurance of the Unseen

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 22:** Level Flight – Build Faith into Life

## Context for the Reader

This chapter closes Section II by building faith into ordinary life. After warning against storm-time doubt, Dean turns to definition: what faith is, why devotion needs it, and why Hebrews 11:1 is both clear and costly in hard times.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean leans on Hebrews’ classic definition and Paul’s emphasis on faith. Scripture ties unseen hope to walking by faith and staying the course.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Faith is necessary for satisfying devoted life | The righteous shall live by faith (Romans 1:17); without faith it is impossible to please Him (Hebrews 11:6) |
| Belief in the plan keeps you on course | We walk by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7); run with endurance the race set before us (Hebrews 12:1–2) |
| Hebrews 11:1 — assurance and conviction of unseen | Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen (Hebrews 11:1) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Assurance of things hoped for

Let’s discuss faith from a biblical perspective. What is faith and why is it so necessary to maintain a devotion to a belief in order to live a satisfying life? If you are going to take proper action to get out of a crisis you must have belief in the plan or it becomes difficult to remain on course. Paul the apostle tells us that faith is the key to understanding life. The book of Hebrews defines faith very well and says in chapter 11, verse 1 (NIV): “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” That little sentence means that we have to believe in something we cannot see, touch, or smell. It is a tough request when we are going through hard times in life.

> **Scholar sidebar — Unseen, not unreal**
> Hebrews 11:1 and 11:6 frame faith as assurance and the path of pleasing God. 2 Corinthians 5:7 and Romans 1:17 refuse sight-only living. Dean does not soften the cost: hard times make the unseen request feel severe — and still necessary for course.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Define before you drift.** Faith has biblical content, not only mood.
2. **Plan needs belief.** Proper action stalls without trust in the recovery path.
3. **Hebrews 11:1.** Assurance of hoped-for things; conviction of the unseen.
4. **Sensory limit.** You cannot see, touch, or smell what faith holds.
5. **Hard-times honesty.** The request is toughest exactly when you need it most.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Faith, per Hebrews 11:1, is assurance of what you hope for and conviction of what you cannot see — and you need that belief to stay on a recovery course even when hard times make it tough.

### Why does definition matter here?
Because vague “faith talk” will not hold the stick when crisis makes the unseen feel empty.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Hebrews 11:1** — Assurance and conviction of the unseen.
- **Hebrews 11:6** — Without faith it is impossible to please Him.
- **2 Corinthians 5:7** — Walk by faith, not by sight.
- **Romans 1:17** — The righteous shall live by faith.
- **Hebrews 12:1–2** — Run with endurance, looking to Jesus.

### A simple practice
Write Hebrews 11:1 in your own words. Under it, list one hoped-for thing you cannot yet see that still guides today’s next right step.
