# Inject Faith and Flex Prayer Muscles

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 22:** Level Flight – Build Faith into Life
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter closes Section II by building faith into life. After Hebrews’ definition, Dean turns personal and practical: faith is injected, prayed, and requested — not admired from a distance.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

---

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean treats faith like trained muscle and prayer like the gym. Scripture joins knowing God, asking, and practiced trust.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Put faith into practice in every circumstance | Faith apart from works is dead (James 2:17); the righteous live by faith (Galatians 3:11) |
| Flex prayer muscles; know God | Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17); this is eternal life, that they know you (John 17:3) |
| Request His participation | Ask, and it will be given (Matthew 7:7–8); draw near to God and He will draw near (James 4:8) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Prayer muscles before the race

In my life I found that I had to put faith into practice. I had to inject faith in my life no matter what was going on. I had to understand that faith is an important aspect of my being. Faith is a too-seldom-used ingredient of recovery from crisis. Just as you need to exercise your leg muscles if you are going to run a race, you need to begin flexing your prayer muscles if you are going to get to know God. You must know God before you can develop faith in Him. To know Him you have to believe that He is an integral part of your life. You can simply request His participation in your life.

> **Scholar sidebar — Train, then trust**
> James 2:17 refuses unused faith. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 and John 17:3 join prayer and knowing God. Matthew 7:7–8 and James 4:8 welcome simple request. Dean’s recovery ingredient is practiced nearness, not crisis-only religion.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Inject, don’t admire.** Faith belongs in daily being, whatever is going on.
2. **Recovery ingredient.** Crisis recovery underuses faith far too often.
3. **Muscle metaphor.** Prayer is trained like legs before a race.
4. **Know, then trust.** Faith in God follows knowing Him as integral.
5. **Simple ask.** You may request His participation — start there.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Faith must be practiced and injected into life — flex prayer muscles to know God, believe He is integral, and simply request His participation, because faith is a neglected recovery ingredient.

### Why prayer muscles before crisis?
Because unused faith and unpracticed prayer leave you weak when recovery needs them most.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **James 2:17** — Faith without works is dead.
- **1 Thessalonians 5:17** — Pray without ceasing.
- **John 17:3** — Know the only true God.
- **Matthew 7:7–8** — Ask; it will be given.
- **James 4:8** — Draw near to God.

### A simple practice
For seven days, set a fixed short prayer time (even five minutes). End each time with one sentence: “God, participate in ___ today.”

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *How do you develop faith? What are prayer muscles? Why is faith a recovery ingredient?*
