# Learn from Every Mission

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 22:** Level Flight – Build Faith into Life
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter closes Section II by building faith into life. After loss’s amputation feeling, Dean gives the briefing’s second entrenched point: under fire, extract advantage; if you survive without learning, you have no business climbing in again.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s combat rule is spiritual apprenticeship under pressure. Scripture treats trials as instructors and refuses wasted suffering.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Use stressful situations to advantage; learn from every experience | Count it joy… that you may be perfect and complete (James 1:2–4); suffering produces endurance (Romans 5:3–4) |
| Survive without learning — do not climb in again | Fool repeats his folly (Proverbs 26:11); be doers of the word, not hearers only (James 1:22–25) |
| Trying times become knowledge toward safe landing | Teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12); all Scripture is profitable for training (2 Timothy 3:16–17) |

## Dean's excerpt

### If you learn nothing

The briefing we heard that day in Vietnam also told us that when we were under fire and in a stressful situation, we needed to be ready to use the situation to our advantage.

The second point in the briefing from Colonel James was equally important. He told us that if we climbed in the airplanes, flew the mission, lived through the anti-aircraft fire, got back to our base safely, and climbed out of the airplane without having learned something, we should never climb in another aircraft. We should learn from every experience in the mission. Every situation, even the stressful ones, should become learning situations in our lives.

The words of that briefer before our mission in combat have become firmly implanted in my mind. He was saying to use all those problematic life experiences to help get yourself to a safe landing. Gain knowledge from those trying times.

> **Scholar sidebar — Survival is not graduation**
> James 1:2–4 and Romans 5:3–4 turn pressure into formation. Proverbs 26:11 and James 1:22–25 refuse unlearned repetition. Psalm 90:12 seeks wisdom from numbered days. Dean’s implanted brief: safe base plus zero learning equals no next sortie — in air or in life.

## Takeaways

1. **Under fire, ready.** Stress is not only endured — it is used.
2. **Learn or quit climbing.** Survival without insight disqualifies the next hop.
3. **Every experience.** Mission learning is total, not optional debrief.
4. **Stress counts.** Hard situations are still classrooms.
5. **Toward landing.** Problematic experiences exist to supply knowledge for firm ground.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
The briefing said if you take fire, return safely, and learn nothing, never climb in again — every stressful situation should become learning that helps you reach a safe landing.

### Why is survival not enough?
Because repeating unexamined missions wastes the cost of the fire you already flew through.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **James 1:2–4** — Testing toward completeness.
- **Romans 5:3–4** — Suffering → endurance → character → hope.
- **James 1:22–25** — Doers, not hearers only.
- **Proverbs 26:11** — Fool repeats folly.
- **Psalm 90:12** — Heart of wisdom.

### A simple practice
After one hard event this week, write three lines: what happened, what you learned, what you will do differently. If you cannot name a lesson, stay on the ground until you can.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What was the second briefing point? Why never climb in again? How do trying times help a safe landing?*
