# Loss Feels Like a Limb Gone

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 22:** Level Flight – Build Faith into Life
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter closes Section II by building faith into life. After “strap it on,” Dean faces the cost when what was strapped on is torn away: job, spouse, business — the desperate sense that part of you is missing. He speaks from cancer and business collapse.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

---

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean legitimizes grief’s body-language. Scripture knows sudden loss, anxiety, and the God who stays when security vanishes.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Loss can feel like part of the body separated | Rachel weeping for her children (Jeremiah 31:15); Jesus wept (John 11:35) |
| Security can disappear in an instant | Do not boast about tomorrow (Proverbs 27:1); the rich man’s barns (Luke 12:16–21) |
| Anxiety at any loss; urge to hold on | Cast all your anxieties on Him (1 Peter 5:7); do not be anxious about your life (Matthew 6:25–34) |

---

## Dean's excerpt

### Like losing an arm or leg

If you are undergoing a separation from a job or the loss of something significant in your life right now, you are probably feeling a part of you has been separated from your body. I remember experiencing that desperate feeling when the business we had built seemed to float away during my bouts with cancer. It was like losing an arm or leg. What I had known as security and a great way of life disappeared in an instant. That job or spouse that is now gone may have felt like a part of you and now you both physically and emotionally feel the loss. When an element of stability suddenly disappears from your life you want to hold on to it. You feel anxiety at any loss.

> **Scholar sidebar — Name the amputation**
> Jeremiah 31:15 and John 11:35 refuse stoic denial. Proverbs 27:1 and Luke 12:16–21 undercut instant security myths. 1 Peter 5:7 and Matthew 6:25–34 meet anxiety without shaming it. Dean’s limb image is testimony: cancer and business taught him how “strapped on” life can tear.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Body-level grief.** Major loss can feel like separation from your own flesh.
2. **Cancer and business.** Dean’s desperate feeling was not abstract.
3. **Instant vanish.** Security and a great way of life can go at once.
4. **Job or spouse.** What felt like part of you leaves physical and emotional ache.
5. **Hold-on anxiety.** Sudden instability breeds the urge to clutch what is gone.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Significant loss — job, spouse, business — can feel like a limb torn off; Dean knew that desperation when cancer and business floated away and security vanished in an instant.

### Why say this after “strap it on”?
Because what you make part of you hurts most when it is taken — and faith must meet that honesty, not skip it.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **John 11:35** — Jesus wept.
- **Jeremiah 31:15** — Rachel weeping.
- **1 Peter 5:7** — Cast anxieties on Him.
- **Matthew 6:25–34** — Do not be anxious about life.
- **Proverbs 27:1** — Do not boast about tomorrow.

### A simple practice
Name the loss that still feels like a missing limb. Write three honest sentences about the anxiety — no fixing yet — then pray 1 Peter 5:7 over the page.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
