# Father Death World Changed

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 24:** New Objectives – Change Your Landing Zone
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter reinforces that the final phase of recovery requires a deliberate change of landing zone. Dean grounds the Faith-and-Family philosophy in personal history: as a teenager his father died suddenly and the whole world of security collapsed. This lesson holds only that loss narrative and the new awareness it forced.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s sudden orphaning of security matches Scripture’s honesty about grief, father-loss, and the God who fathers the fatherless while the heart still aches.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Sudden death changes economy and existence | Man’s days are like grass (Psalm 103:15–16); you do not know what tomorrow will bring (James 4:14) |
| Missing camaraderie; hole in the heart | Jesus wept (John 11:35); the Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18) |
| Father’s care had been taken for granted | Father of the fatherless and protector of widows (Psalm 68:5); a father of the fatherless (Psalm 10:14) |

## Dean's excerpt

### When Dad was gone

I remember as a teenager when my father died very suddenly, how quickly my world changed. It was not only a change economically but more importantly, it was a change of my very existence. I missed the camaraderie and my father’s contribution to my life. I missed him and could not figure out how to fill the hole I felt in my heart. For our family there was no longer confidence in there being food on the table or a roof over our heads. We lived on a farm that we suddenly had to pay for and then also to rely on to feed the family. We had taken Dad for granted because everything was always where it was supposed to be. He worried about paying the bills and keeping us fed. My father took good care of our group. The insecurity resulting from his absence created a new awareness that I had never before experienced in my life.

> **Scholar sidebar — Broken heart, Father of fatherless**
> Psalm 103:15–16 and James 4:14 name life’s brevity. John 11:35 and Psalm 34:18 honor grief without rush. Psalm 68:5 and 10:14 name God as father to the fatherless. Dean does not tidy the hole — he tells the truth of it.

## Takeaways

1. **Sudden change.** Father’s death rewrote Dean’s world overnight.
2. **More than money.** Economic shock mattered; existence and identity shook harder.
3. **Unfilled hole.** Camaraderie and care left a heart-gap he could not solve quickly.
4. **Taken for granted.** Stability had been Dad’s quiet work — bills, food, roof.
5. **New awareness.** Insecurity itself became a teacher he had never met.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
When his father died suddenly in his teens, Dean’s world changed economically and at the level of existence — and the insecurity forced a new awareness he had never known.

### Why tell this story under “new objectives”?
Because changing the landing zone often begins when the old security person is gone and the runway must be re-chosen.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Psalm 34:18** — Near to the brokenhearted.
- **Psalm 68:5** — Father of the fatherless.
- **John 11:35** — Jesus wept.
- **James 4:14** — You do not know tomorrow.
- **Psalm 103:15–16** — Days like grass.

### A simple practice
If you carry a similar loss, write one sentence naming what changed (economy, existence, both) without forcing a neat moral yet. Bring that sentence to prayer.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *How did Dean’s father’s death shape him? What does loss do to security? How does grief relate to changing landing zones?*
