# Life Not Static Prepare Unexpected

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 24:** New Objectives – Change Your Landing Zone
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter reinforces that the final phase of recovery requires a deliberate change of landing zone. After naming change as reality, Dean turns personal: most seasons are exciting but not static, and nearly every crisis with Vickie arrived unforeseen yet rewrote the whole household. This lesson holds that non-static honesty and the decision to prepare for the unexpected.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean refuses the fantasy of a static life and ties home security to prep for surprise. Scripture knows plans change, days are vapor, and wise households build before the storm.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Life periods are exciting but not static | What is your life? You are a mist (James 4:13–15); man is like a breath (Psalm 144:4) |
| Crises often come unforeseen yet change the whole family | A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps (Proverbs 16:9); time and chance happen to them all (Ecclesiastes 9:11) |
| Prepare for the unexpected to secure the home | The wise man built his house on the rock (Matthew 7:24–25); unless the Lord builds the house (Psalm 127:1) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Not static — prepare the unexpected

Have you experienced those times in your life that were not static? In fact, I would rightfully depict most periods as exciting but certainly not static. My guess is that your life is pretty much like that as well, or you would not be reading this book.

In nearly every one of the crises Vickie and I have endured during our marriage, we did not foresee the impending transformations in our lives. Each of those afore described incidents, however, resulted in an immediate change in the lives of my wife, my family, and me. We determined that if our family was to establish a firm foundation for our lives and have some security in our home, we should prepare for the unexpected. We established a basic philosophy that has worked and decided that we should share it with others.

> **Scholar sidebar — Mist days, rock house**
> James 4:13–15 and Psalm 144:4 refuse static self-assurance. Proverbs 16:9 and Ecclesiastes 9:11 name unforeseen turns. Matthew 7:24–25 and Psalm 127:1 tie household security to foundation and the Lord’s building. Dean’s marriage record matches that realism.

## Takeaways

1. **Not static.** Exciting seasons still move under your feet.
2. **Unforeseen is normal.** Dean and Vickie rarely saw the next transformation coming.
3. **Household impact.** Crisis rewrote wife, family, and him together — not in isolation.
4. **Prep decision.** Firm foundation and home security require preparing for the unexpected.
5. **Shareable philosophy.** What worked for them is meant to be passed on.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Life is exciting but not static, crises often arrive unforeseen and rewrite the whole household, so prepare for the unexpected if you want a firm foundation at home.

### Why include the marriage record here?
Because landing-zone change is not theory — it is what happened to Dean’s family again and again.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **James 4:13–15** — Life is a mist; say “if the Lord wills.”
- **Proverbs 16:9** — Heart plans; Lord directs steps.
- **Matthew 7:24–25** — House on the rock.
- **Psalm 127:1** — Unless the Lord builds the house.
- **Ecclesiastes 9:11** — Time and chance.

### A simple practice
With your household (or alone if solo), name one “unexpected” you will prep for this month — not in fear, but in concrete readiness (contacts, prayer, margin).
