# Cancer Pity Party Senior Year

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 25:** Share Your Experience – Help Others Land Safely

## Context for the Reader

This chapter demonstrates that recovery is not complete until it is shared. The bright basketball years break here: early in Ryan’s senior season, cancer stops life as the Rush family knew it. Dean is blunt about wheelchair days, floundering business, and a self-imposed pity party. This lesson holds only that collapse beat — the setup Lonnie will interrupt.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean refuses to romanticize depression under cancer. Scripture holds space for deep trouble, warns that isolation deepens despair, and still names God near the crushed without denying the dark.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Expected joy season stopped by sudden diagnosis | Man knows not his time (Ecclesiastes 9:12); you do not know what tomorrow will bring (James 4:14) |
| Confidence dwindled; fun became chore; felt misunderstood | Why are you cast down, O my soul (Psalm 42:5, 11); the Lord is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18) |
| Self-imposed pity party — depressing event after another | Godly grief vs worldly grief (2 Corinthians 7:10); hope deferred makes the heart sick (Proverbs 13:12) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Life stopped as we had known it

Early in our son’s senior year in high school, we expected that this was going to be a great year. He loved basketball and we enjoyed being with the people involved with the community surrounding the kids. We enjoyed the other team members’ parents so we looked forward to a fun season of traveling to ballgames and fellowshipping with the other fathers and mothers at the games. Unfortunately, during this time I was diagnosed with cancer and our life stopped as we had known it. Instead of flying to basketball games, I was being wheeled around in a wheelchair, our business was floundering, my confidence in life was dwindling, and everything that had been fun was now a chore. I could see no enjoyment in life and also was not feeling that anyone could understand what I was going through. I was throwing a huge, self-imposed pity party. My life was one depressing event after another.

> **Scholar sidebar — Honest dark**
> Ecclesiastes 9:12 and James 4:14 name sudden turns. Psalm 42 and 34:18 give language for cast-down souls and nearness in brokenness. 2 Corinthians 7:10 and Proverbs 13:12 warn grief that only sickens. Dean owns the pity party — diagnosis explains pain; he still names the spiral.

## Takeaways

1. **Expected greatness.** Senior year and community fellowship looked bright.
2. **Cancer interrupt.** Diagnosis stopped life as they had known it.
3. **Total drain.** Wheelchair, business stress, confidence loss, fun as chore.
4. **Isolation feeling.** He felt no one could understand.
5. **Named spiral.** Self-imposed pity party; depressing event after another.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
When cancer hit early in his son’s senior basketball year, life stopped — wheelchair, floundering business, no enjoyment — and he threw a huge self-imposed pity party.

### Why admit the pity party?
So later help (Lonnie) and recovery are grace into honesty, not a pride story that never sank.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Psalm 42:5, 11** — Why are you cast down, O my soul?
- **Psalm 34:18** — Near to the brokenhearted.
- **James 4:14** — You do not know tomorrow.
- **2 Corinthians 7:10** — Godly vs worldly grief.
- **Proverbs 13:12** — Hope deferred.

### A simple practice
If you are in a similar spiral, write one sentence that tells the truth without editing for bravery. Then write one sentence naming one person who might understand or sit with you. Contact them if safe.
