## Context for the Reader

This chapter demonstrates that recovery is not complete until it is shared. The story of Lonnie Ball videotaping basketball games is a beautiful, concrete example of how small acts of kindness can have life-saving impact. This lesson holds only Lonnie’s service and Dean’s realization of worth.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s friend embodies costly, specific love. Scripture prizes burdens borne, time given, and honor shown to the low — not speeches alone.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| No obligation yet he pulled Dean from depression | Bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2); love one another earnestly (1 Peter 4:8) |
| Simple repeated service — every game, every drive, hospital visits | Whatever you did for one of the least of these… you did for me (Matthew 25:36–40); let us not love in word or talk but in deed (1 John 3:18) |
| Saw worth when Dean doubted; invested time and joy | Encourage the fainthearted, help the weak (1 Thessalonians 5:14); rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep (Romans 12:15) |

---

## Dean's excerpt

### Simple service, huge difference

We had a great friend, Lonnie Ball, who had no reason to take his time to pull me out of my depression but he did. He knew about my love for watching our son play basketball and so he took it upon himself to help me. He drove to every game where Ryan played that year and videotaped the games. He would then drive to wherever I was located, even the hospital, where I waited for the scores of the game late at night, and played the video so that I could see the game. Lonnie will never know what a difference he made in my life by taking time to perform this simple service. I realized that he saw worth in me even when I was doubting my own worth. He invested his time in bringing joy into my life.

> **Scholar sidebar — Deed love**
> Galatians 6:2 and 1 Peter 4:8 name burden-bearing love. Matthew 25:36–40 and 1 John 3:18 make visit and deed the measure. 1 Thessalonians 5:14 and Romans 12:15 steady the weak with presence. Lonnie’s tapes are theology with a VCR.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Unowed help.** Lonnie had no duty-clock; he chose time anyway.
2. **Knew the love.** He aimed help at Dean’s joy — Ryan’s basketball.
3. **Every game.** Consistency, not a one-off gesture.
4. **Hospital delivery.** Drove tapes to wherever Dean was, late nights included.
5. **Worth restored.** Simple service told Dean he still mattered; joy returned.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Lonnie Ball pulled Dean from cancer depression by videotaping every Ryan game and bringing the tapes even to the hospital — simple service that showed worth and brought joy.

### Why is this the chapter’s centerpiece?
It is the concrete picture of helping someone else land safely — and of receiving that help.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Galatians 6:2** — Bear one another’s burdens.
- **1 John 3:18** — Love in deed and truth.
- **Matthew 25:36–40** — You visited me.
- **1 Thessalonians 5:14** — Help the weak.
- **Romans 12:15** — Rejoice and weep with others.

### A simple practice
Do one “Lonnie-sized” act this week: specific, repeated if needed, aimed at what the person actually loves — not what is convenient for you.
