# Lean Forward: Acts 20:24

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 26:** Perfect Touchdown – Examples in Good Landings

## Context for the Reader

Chapter 26 ends by turning the three friends’ landings into the reader’s choice: quit dreaming, or find a new way and inspire others. Dean seals the charge with Acts 20:24 — finish the race and the gospel task.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

The lean-forward charge and Paul’s race language meet: life course is chosen under God, self-pity is refused, and finishing the assigned testimony outranks self-preservation as the highest good.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Decide and follow through with a solid landing | Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans (Proverbs 16:3) |
| You determine course; refuse self-pity; move forward | Forgetting what is behind… I press on (Philippians 3:13–14) |
| Finish the race; testify to the gospel of grace | Acts 20:24 (Dean’s verse); I have finished the race (2 Timothy 4:7) |

## Dean's excerpt

### You decide — lean forward

It is inspiring to see people decide on an action and follow through with a solid landing. Are you going to quit dreaming about the future because of your crisis or are you going to find a new way of living and inspire others to go forward? You are the only one who can determine the course of your life. You can lean forward or be knocked on your rear end by a major challenge. Leaning forward is a good step and it makes it tougher to fall backward. You decide. You are the only who can make a determination not to pity yourself and to move forward.

“However, I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace.” Acts 20:24 (NIV)

> **Scholar sidebar — Race over self-pity**
> Proverbs 16:3 and Philippians 3:13–14 hold commit and press on. Acts 20:24 and 2 Timothy 4:7 make finishing the assigned race the measure. Dean’s “lean forward” is bodily metaphor for that resolve.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Decide and follow through.** Solid landing is action completed.
2. **Two futures.** Quit dreaming, or new way of living that inspires others.
3. **You determine course.** Agency under crisis is not denied.
4. **Lean forward.** Posture makes falling backward harder.
5. **Acts 20:24.** Finish the race; testify to grace — life worth measured by the task.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
After three friends’ landings, Dean asks whether you will quit dreaming or lean forward into a new way of living — sealed by Acts 20:24’s call to finish the race and testify to grace.

### Why end with Acts 20:24?
Because perfect touchdown is not comfort-first; it is finishing the task Jesus gave.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Acts 20:24** — Finish the race; gospel of grace.
- **Philippians 3:13–14** — Press on.
- **Proverbs 16:3** — Commit plans to the Lord.
- **2 Timothy 4:7** — Finished the race.

### A simple practice
Stand and physically lean slightly forward. Name one self-pity sentence you refuse and one race-task step you will take this week.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What does lean forward mean? How does Acts 20:24 close Chapter 26? Who decides not to pity yourself?*
