# Neither Wallowed in Self-Pity

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 26:** Perfect Touchdown – Examples in Good Landings
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

Before the third friend, Dean summarizes the Parkinson’s pair. Perfect touchdown includes refusing to let self-pity own the household. This lesson holds that shared pattern only.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

---

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Self-pity is a real temptation under crisis; Scripture counters it with perseverance, mutual courage, and forward motion that blesses the watching community.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| New course of action in crisis | Do not conform… but be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2) |
| No wallowing in self-pity for self or family | Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7) |
| Perseverance gives others courage | Let us not become weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9) |

---

## Dean's excerpt

### Example that loans courage

Both men that I have described are wonderful friends who have set an example for me and everyone who knows them. When enduring crisis they decided to take a new course of action and that action has affected everyone around them. Neither of the men allowed themselves or their families to wallow in self-pity. They instead became examples that will continue to influence all of us who have the pleasure of knowing them. Truly, their perseverance gives many of us the courage to go forward.

> **Scholar sidebar — Pity refused, courage shared**
> Romans 12:2 renews the mind toward a new course. 1 Peter 5:7 relocates anxiety. Galatians 6:9 keeps good work from weariness. Dean’s friends protect their families from a pity culture as much as themselves.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Friends to Dean.** These are not distant case studies.
2. **New course.** Action, not only endurance slogans.
3. **Affects everyone around.** Landing is communal in effect.
4. **No self-pity — self or family.** Household culture matters.
5. **Perseverance loans courage.** Others go forward because they watched.

---

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Richard and Howard’s new courses of action refused self-pity for themselves and their families, and their perseverance still gives others courage to go forward.

### Why ban wallowing?
Because pity multiplies inside a household and freezes the people who need a plan.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Romans 12:2** — Renewed mind; new course.
- **1 Peter 5:7** — Cast anxiety on Him.
- **Galatians 6:9** — Do not grow weary.

### A simple practice
Ask one household member whether pity or forward courage has been the louder voice this month. Agree on one shared forward act.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *How do Richard and Howard refuse self-pity? Why does example matter to Dean? What is perseverance for?*
