# Never Waste Runway — Sully on the Hudson

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 27:** Use All the Available Runway – Trusted Advisors
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

The chapter title becomes aviation parlance: never waste airspeed, altitude, or runway. Dean introduces Captain Sullenberger’s Hudson River landing as the supreme modern picture of using every remaining resource. This lesson holds the maxim and the emergency setup (execution details follow in the next lesson).

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Using every remaining resource under threat matches biblical stewardship and sober urgency when ordinary power is gone.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Use every resource available | The wise store up choice food and olive oil (Proverbs 21:20); make the most of every opportunity (Ephesians 5:16) |
| Never waste airspeed, altitude, runway | Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise (Ephesians 5:15) |
| No thrust left; use everything remaining | My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9) |

---

## Dean's excerpt

### Every resource; Hudson setup

Use every resource available. Again, using old aviation parlance, you should never waste airspeed, altitude, or runway. One of the greatest illustrations of that fact was the superbly executed emergency forced landing in the Hudson River on February 4, 2009 by U.S. Air Captain Chelsey “Sulley” Sullenberger. He used every aspect of flight dynamics to find a place to land the airplane when both engines were knocked out by the ingestion of geese. There was no thrust available from either engine. The pilot had no choice but to utilize everything left at his disposal to fly the airplane. We now know there was a fantastic outcome to this drama.

> **Scholar sidebar — Nothing wasted**
> Proverbs 21:20 and Ephesians 5:15–16 urge wise use of what remains. 2 Corinthians 12:9 meets powerlessness with sufficient grace. Dean’s maxim is the chapter title in cockpit language.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Every resource.** Counsel chapter becomes total-resource chapter.
2. **Three never-wastes.** Airspeed, altitude, runway.
3. **Sully named.** Hudson, February 2009, forced landing.
4. **Double engine loss.** Geese; zero thrust.
5. **Everything left.** Only remaining tools; outcome proved the maxim.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Never waste airspeed, altitude, or runway — and Sully’s Hudson landing shows what using every remaining resource looks like when both engines are gone.

### Why aviation parlance here?
Because “use all the available runway” is not a soft metaphor; it is a survival rule transferred to crisis counsel.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Ephesians 5:15–16** — Live wisely; make the most of opportunity.
- **Proverbs 21:20** — Wise store resources.
- **2 Corinthians 12:9** — Power in weakness.

### A simple practice
List your remaining “airspeed, altitude, runway” in a current crisis (energy, time, people, skills). Mark any you are currently wasting.
