# Sully's Perfect Touchdown and the Triad

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 27:** Use All the Available Runway – Trusted Advisors
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

After naming the Hudson emergency, Dean shows the precision of the touchdown and maps it to the book’s three airmen steps — then stresses that Sully consulted people and experience. This lesson holds execution, triad, and consultation.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Precision under pressure, trained readiness, and seeking help from others align with biblical wisdom that joins skill, counsel, and humility.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Expert accuracy; level wings; avoid cartwheel | Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart (Colossians 3:23) |
| Control → analyze/act → land ASAP | God is not a God of confusion but of peace (1 Corinthians 14:33); be doers (James 1:22) |
| Years of teaching; consult ATC and copilot | Plans fail for lack of counsel (Proverbs 15:22); two are better than one (Ecclesiastes 4:9) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Level wings; full triad; full consult

Captain Sullenberger landed the airplane in the Hudson with expert accuracy. He landed the plane just above stall speed with perfectly level wings so there was minimal damage to the fuselage. If either engine had touched the water early it would have caused the airplane to cartwheel.

The landing of that airplane and the perfection of the touchdown in the Hudson is probably one of the greatest examples in recent years of maintaining control, analyzing the situation/taking proper action, and landing as soon as practical. Sully, as we have come to know him, humbly stated in a television interview that his landing was the culmination of years of being taught what to do in an emergency situation. Sullenberger decided to get the airplane on the ground using the best available options. He gleaned experiences from his vast background of flying different types of aircraft; he consulted with the air traffic controllers (ATC) and his copilot to gain the best expertise in the shortest amount of time to quickly make the right decision. (You can listen to the cockpit voice recording and a video depiction of this incredible flight by going to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjXCulRjPas). I highly recommend taking time to listen to the cockpit voice recording. Captain Sullenberger consulted with all his available resources and experience to determine the best avenue to safety for himself and his passengers. This is an excellent example of what can result when we seek help from others.

> **Scholar sidebar — Trained, humble, not alone**
> Colossians 3:23 honors wholehearted skill. 1 Corinthians 14:33 and James 1:22 steady order and action. Proverbs 15:22 and Ecclesiastes 4:9 underwrite consultation. Dean’s point for life: seek help; use the triad.
