# Bible Does Not Say Quit

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 28:** Move Forward to Land – Keep Moving to Grow Stronger
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter drives home one of the most practical principles in the book: stagnation kills. Whether it is an airplane losing airspeed or a person losing purpose after retirement or crisis, the message is the same — keep moving forward.

This lesson is the biblical refusal of quit-as-default: contribute experience; R&R is not the same as permanent withdrawal from the cause.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s headline is plain: Scripture pushes perseverance and usefulness, not abandonment of the field. His Judges citation is stark illustration of intolerance for desertion mid-battle; the pastoral landing is influence and shared experience.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Nothing in the Bible says quit | Let us run with endurance (Hebrews 12:1); do not grow weary (Galatians 6:9) |
| Opposite of quitting is perseverance | Blessed is the one who remains steadfast (James 1:12); hold fast (Hebrews 10:23) |
| Judges 20:39 battle context (Dean’s citation) | Read Judges 20 in full; theme of conflict and resolve — Dean applies against retiring from the cause |
| Continue living and contributing | As each has received a gift, use it (1 Peter 4:10); older teach younger (Titus 2:2–5) |
| People need your experience | Wisdom is with the aged (Job 12:12); recount God’s works (Psalm 78:4) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Contribute — do not quit the cause

Conversely, nothing in the Bible says quit. In fact, it says quite the opposite. In Judges 20:39, Benjamin actually kills the soldiers under his command who said they were going to retire from battle. He had no use for them. Certainly it was a dramatic action to eliminate those soldiers, but he had no use for people who were not contributing to the cause ahead. I am not saying that R&R in retirement is all bad, but I am, personally, convinced that we are supposed to continue living and contributing to society. It is important and biblical to make a positive influence on the people around you. They need your experience.

> **Scholar sidebar — Stark text, pastoral landing**
> Hebrews 12 and Galatians 6 carry the “do not quit” thesis more safely for daily counsel than the Judges war narrative. Dean himself flags the action as dramatic; his application is contribution to the cause ahead and experience shared — not a call to violence. Hold 1 Peter 4:10 and Titus 2 as the constructive shape of “they need your experience.”

---

## Takeaways

1. **Quit is not a biblical default.** Dean hears the opposite throughout Scripture.
2. **Judges illustration is severe.** He uses Benjamin’s intolerance for soldiers retiring mid-battle as a shock against non-contribution.
3. **He owns the drama.** “Dramatic action” — then pivots to usefulness for the cause ahead.
4. **R&R is allowed.** Rest is not the enemy; permanent non-contribution is.
5. **Experience is owed in love.** Positive influence; people around you need what you have lived.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
The Bible does not teach quitting contribution; rest may be fine, but you are still called to live, influence others, and share experience.

### How should I handle the Judges citation?
Read it as Dean’s stark ancient illustration against deserting the cause — then land where he lands: contribute experience, not replicate wartime violence.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Hebrews 12:1** — Run with endurance.
- **Galatians 6:9** — Do not grow weary.
- **James 1:12** — Steadfast under trial.
- **1 Peter 4:10** — Use your gift.
- **Job 12:12** — Wisdom with the aged.
- **Judges 20** — Context for Dean’s citation.

### A simple practice
Name one person who needs your experience this month. Share one hard-won lesson (call, meal, mentor hour) without quitting the field of love.
