# God Built Us to Go Forward

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 28:** Move Forward to Land – Keep Moving to Grow Stronger

## Context for the Reader

This chapter drives home one of the most practical principles in the book: stagnation kills. Whether it is an airplane losing airspeed or a person losing purpose after retirement or crisis, the message is the same — keep moving forward.

This lesson is the theological and pastoral center of the motion theme: design, living water imagery, and counsel to the bereaved.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean roots forward motion in how God made us and how living water stays pure. Scripture pairs creation purpose with rivers of life and refuses a halt that becomes spiritual stagnation — including after grief.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| God built us to go forward and not stop | We are His workmanship (Ephesians 2:10); forget what lies behind, strain forward (Philippians 3:13–14) |
| New direction restores constant life | Behold, I am doing a new thing (Isaiah 43:19) |
| Moving water never becomes stagnant | Rivers of living water (John 7:38); a garden fountain, a well of living water (Song 4:15) |
| After death of a loved one, stay busy in love’s legacy | Comfort one another (1 Thessalonians 4:13–18); weep, yet hope; do not grow weary (Galatians 6:9) |
| Even in crisis, continue moving forward | When I am afraid, I put my trust in You (Psalm 56:3); walk through the valley (Psalm 23:4) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Moving water never stagnates

God built us to go forward and to not stop. If we can move in a new direction, life is again constant. Moving water never becomes stagnant. I preach a lot of funerals and I have told many of the loved ones of people who have died that they should not stop being busy. Their loved one kept them busy in life and full of love. If that person were alive they would expect them to continue being busy. Fill up the time with activity. Move forward with life. Even if you are in crisis it is important to continue moving forward.

> **Scholar sidebar — Design, flow, and grief**
> Ephesians 2:10 and Philippians 3 underwrite “God built us to go forward.” John 7:38 underwrites moving water. Dean’s funeral counsel is not denial of mourning (1 Thessalonians 4 still comforts with hope); it is resistance to a second death — the living stop living. Activity here is love’s continuity, not distraction as theology.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Forward is design, not personality type.** God built us to go forward and not stop.
2. **New direction restores flow.** Life becomes “constant” again when motion resumes on a new heading.
3. **Stagnant water is the warning image.** Stop the flow and purity/life quality dies.
4. **Grief still moves.** Dean’s funeral counsel: stay busy as the loved one would expect — full of love’s work.
5. **Crisis is not an exemption.** Continue moving forward even then.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
God designed us for forward motion like living water; after loss and in crisis, fill the time with activity and keep moving rather than stagnate.

### Does “stay busy” cancel mourning?
No — Dean’s frame is continuing the love and life the deceased shared, not pretending pain is gone.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Ephesians 2:10** — His workmanship.
- **Philippians 3:13–14** — Strain forward.
- **John 7:38** — Rivers of living water.
- **1 Thessalonians 4:13–18** — Grief with hope.
- **Psalm 23:4** — Walk through the valley.

### A simple practice
If grieving or in crisis: schedule two “fill the time with activity” blocks this week that serve love (meal for someone, walk, worship, small repair) — not numbing scroll time.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What does Dean say God built us for? How does he counsel people after funerals?* Keep moving-water and stay-busy paired.
