# Jumpstart Life After Crisis

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 28:** Move Forward to Land – Keep Moving to Grow Stronger
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter drives home one of the most practical principles in the book: stagnation kills. Whether it is an airplane losing airspeed or a person losing purpose after retirement or crisis, the message is the same — keep moving forward.

This lesson is the crisis application of the airspeed rule: when life feels stopped, you must take action to restart the next beat.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s defibrillator image is severe mercy: stopped life needs restart, not endless autopsy of the stop. Scripture calls the weary to rise, the dead-hearted to awake, and the will to choose life.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Crisis can make everything feel stopped | Why are you cast down, O my soul? Hope in God (Psalm 42:5) |
| You must take action to jumpstart life | Rise, pick up your bed, and walk (John 5:8); strengthen weak hands (Isaiah 35:3–4) |
| Next beat sustains life | In Him was life (John 1:4); choose life (Deuteronomy 30:19) |
| Restart or die (metaphor of stalled living) | Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead (Ephesians 5:14) |
| Wanting life while blocking forward motion | Faith without works is dead (James 2:17); sluggard’s craving kills (Proverbs 21:25) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Restart the next beat

We are all destined to make something happen. If you are currently undergoing a crisis with your job or life, you may probably feel that everything has stopped. You must find a way of getting back into that motion of life. It is up to you to take the action to jumpstart life again. If your heart stops and there is a trained medical technician near, the technician will immediately begin to pump your chest or use a defibrillator to electrically shock your heart into action. If the heart remains unresponsive, then it will die. The heart must continue to the next beat for you to sustain life. It must continue beating and keeping the blood in our veins moving. There is always a need for the next contraction of the heart muscle to keep us alive. Your life is similar: if it stops due to a crisis it must be restarted or you die. The heart is constantly moving forward to take the next beat. You must determine whether or not to continue. There are those who give up on doing anything with life, and yet want to live. Their existence is pretty pitiful, though. They prevent themselves from moving forward.

> **Scholar sidebar — Next beat, not perfect plan**
> John 5:8 and Isaiah 35 underwrite action when everything feels stopped: rise, strengthen, walk. Dean is not denying grief or medical reality; he is refusing the contradiction of wanting life while blocking every next contraction. The “pitiful” line is pastoral severity aimed at self-prevention, not at people who need help taking the first shock of restart.

## Takeaways

1. **Crisis feels like full stop.** Job or life upheaval can freeze the sense of motion.
2. **Jumpstart is your action.** Dean puts agency back on the person: find a way back into motion.
3. **Next beat is enough.** The heart metaphor centers continuous small forward moves, not a finished masterpiece.
4. **Unresponsive living dies.** Stalled recovery is not neutral holding.
5. **Wanting life is not the same as moving.** Self-prevention is the tragedy he names.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
When crisis stops your life, you must take action to jumpstart the next beat — like a heart that must keep contracting — or you prevent your own forward motion.

### Is he saying “just get over it”?
No — he is saying stopped life needs restart energy (sometimes with help nearby), not endless freeze while still claiming you want to live.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Psalm 42:5** — Hope when the soul is cast down.
- **John 5:8** — Rise and walk.
- **Deuteronomy 30:19** — Choose life.
- **Ephesians 5:14** — Awake and arise.
- **James 2:17** — Faith without works is dead.

### A simple practice
Write the “next beat” only: one action under 30 minutes that restarts motion (shower, meal, call, walk, bill, prayer). Do it before analyzing the whole crisis again.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What does Dean mean by jumpstart life? How is crisis like a stopped heart?* Keep agency and next-beat focus primary.
