# Pastor Second Career Credibility

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 28:** Move Forward to Land – Keep Moving to Grow Stronger
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter drives home one of the most practical principles in the book: stagnation kills. Whether it is an airplane losing airspeed or a person losing purpose after retirement or crisis, the message is the same — keep moving forward.

This lesson is Dean’s lived proof of the retirement-purpose counsel: skills transfer, suffering becomes credibility, and the mission is “do not quit.”

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean’s second vocation shows redeemed continuity: prior work and prior pain become tools for comfort. Scripture patterns comfort received into comfort given, and elders who can teach from life under God.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Lord led to another profession | The Lord directs a person’s steps (Proverbs 16:9); called according to purpose (Romans 8:28) |
| Earlier skills serve present vocation | Varied gifts, same Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4–6); stewards (1 Peter 4:10) |
| Endured problems enable understanding others | Comfort others with the comfort we received (2 Corinthians 1:3–4) |
| Credibility over empty sympathy | Speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15); gentle restoration (Galatians 6:1–2) |
| Inspire them not to quit; find new purpose | Encourage one another (1 Thessalonians 5:11); press on (Philippians 3:14) |

## Dean's excerpt

### From aviation leadership to pastor

As I write this book I am well over sixty years old and enjoying retirement from my lifelong profession of managing people and aviation companies. I thoroughly enjoyed that work and all the great people whom I met during my working years around aviators. The Lord led me to another profession that I am now enjoying even more than the first career because it allows me to use many of the skills learned in my earlier experiences. Those learned skills now contribute to my present vocation as a pastor. I am now better able to understand what people are going through when they have a crisis because I have endured many of the problems they are encountering. It is much more credible to a person who is going through a job loss for me to offer advice from my experience rather than to tell them I am sorry but I can’t understand how you feel. I can now tell them how I got through that same event in my life. My purpose is to inspire them to not quit. They must move forward and find new purpose.

At a younger age I could not have provided that same credibility in helping other people with problems. It was necessary to have experienced some problems myself before I could help others.

> **Scholar sidebar — Comfort that has a scar**
> 2 Corinthians 1:3–4 is the spine of this testimony: endured crisis becomes transferable comfort. Proverbs 16:9 underwrites “the Lord led.” Dean’s aim sentence is the chapter’s mission statement in personal form — inspire them not to quit; move forward; find new purpose. Youth alone could not buy this credibility.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Retirement was a hinge, not a void.** Enjoyed first career; led into a second he enjoys more.
2. **Skills compound.** Managing people and aviation now serve pastoring.
3. **Suffering is curriculum.** Endured problems unlock understanding of others’ crises.
4. **Credibility beats empty sorry.** “How I got through” outweighs “I can’t understand.”
5. **Mission: do not quit.** Move forward and find new purpose — and youth could not yet carry that weight.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Over sixty, the Lord moved him from aviation leadership into pastoring, where lived crises give credible counsel that inspires people not to quit but to find new purpose.

### Why does age matter in his telling?
Because some credibility required having walked through the problems himself first.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **2 Corinthians 1:3–4** — Comfort shared.
- **Proverbs 16:9** — Lord directs steps.
- **1 Peter 4:10** — Steward gifts.
- **1 Thessalonians 5:11** — Encourage one another.
- **Philippians 3:14** — Press on toward the goal.

### A simple practice
Write one crisis you have endured and one sentence of “how I got through” you could offer someone in a similar valley — only if invited and gentle.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *How did Dean become a pastor? Why does he say experience gives credibility?* Keep second-career facts intact.
