# Sully Hudson Move Toward Objective

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 28:** Move Forward to Land – Keep Moving to Grow Stronger
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter drives home one of the most practical principles in the book: stagnation kills. Whether it is an airplane losing airspeed or a person losing purpose after retirement or crisis, the message is the same — keep moving forward. The reference to Captain Sulley’s “Miracle on the Hudson” is especially powerful.

This lesson is the chapter close: feet toward solution, experience shared, and Sully’s continuous forward path to the river.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean ends where the chapter began: motion toward an objective. Scripture pairs practical steps with mutual help and a wise search for good under God — finishing the course without giving up.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Move feet toward a solution | Faith without works is dead (James 2:17); make level paths for your feet (Hebrews 12:13) |
| Only you direct your life forward (agency under God) | Commit your work to the Lord (Proverbs 16:3); I press on (Philippians 3:14) |
| Don’t stay engrossed past the landing objective | Redeem the time (Ephesians 5:15–16); finish the race (2 Timothy 4:7) |
| Help others and you are helped | Give, and it will be given (Luke 6:38); bear burdens (Galatians 6:2) |
| Ecclesiastes 2:1 — seek good things (Dean’s citation) | Ecclesiastes 2:1 (NIV as Dean quotes); also every good gift from above (James 1:17) |
| Constant motion toward objective saves | Run to obtain (1 Corinthians 9:24); endure to the end (Matthew 24:13) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Feet toward solution — Sully’s path

You cannot take a step toward solving a problem unless you move your feet toward a solution. Only you can direct your life to go forward. We can become so engrossed in examining the problem that we forget the objective of the exercise is to move forward, to land the airplane we are flying, and eventually solve our problem. We need to extricate ourselves from a dilemma. Use your experience and share it with others by looking down at your life, utilizing your life experience, and putting it to work in a positive way to help others. When we help others we quickly learn we are also helping ourselves. Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 2:1(NIV), “Come now, let’s give pleasure a try. Let’s look for the ‘good things’ in life.”

One of the most pertinent facts of the brilliant landing Captain Sulley performed on the Hudson River was that he correctly traded the altitude for airspeed with his airplane. He had to move forward at a positive enough rate to avoid a stall and not so fast that he would not be able to stretch his glide to reach the objective of the Hudson River. He accomplished those objectives by moving forward, not quitting, or giving up. He moved constantly toward his objective and it resulted in a safe landing which saved 156 lives. You need to move forward in your crisis and gain strength from the experience.

> **Scholar sidebar — Objective over autopsy**
> James 2:17 and Hebrews 12:13 underwrite moving feet. Galatians 6:2 underwrites shared experience. Sully’s trade of altitude for airspeed is Dean’s final aviation seal on Chapter 28: enough forward rate to avoid stall, enough judgment to stretch the glide to the real field — the Hudson — not quitting mid-problem analysis. Gain strength from the experience by continuing toward the objective.

## Takeaways

1. **Feet first.** No solution step without bodily (or concrete) movement toward it.
2. **Agency is yours under God.** Only you direct your life forward — examination is not the whole exercise.
3. **Objective is land and solve.** Problem-fixation can forget the point.
4. **Shared experience multiplies.** Helping others helps you; seek good things.
5. **Sully model.** Trade what you must for airspeed; move constantly toward the objective; do not quit — 156 lives as the fruit of forward motion.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Stop only examining the problem — move your feet toward landing it, share experience, and like Sully keep enough forward speed to reach the real objective without stalling or quitting.

### What did Sully get right in Dean’s telling?
He traded altitude for airspeed, kept a forward rate that avoided stall, stretched the glide to the Hudson, and never gave up — saving 156 lives.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **James 2:17** — Faith with works.
- **Hebrews 12:13** — Level paths for feet.
- **Galatians 6:2** — Bear burdens.
- **Ecclesiastes 2:1** — Dean’s Solomon citation on seeking good.
- **Philippians 3:14** — Press on toward the goal.

### A simple practice
Write Problem (one sentence) / Objective landing (one sentence) / Next foot-move (today). Then offer one piece of experience to someone else this week.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What does Dean say about Captain Sully? How do I move feet toward a solution?* Keep Hudson and 156 lives exact.
