# Fear of Heights Secret

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 29:** Enjoy the Moment – Landing Brings Relief
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter acknowledges the emotional release that comes when the crisis finally ends. Dean’s honest admission of his fear of heights on the Empire State Building observation deck is a beautiful, vulnerable moment that humanizes the entire book.

This lesson is the confession itself: the pilot-author who feared leaving terra firma on a ladder.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Dean models truthful self-knowledge. Scripture does not require leaders to pretend fearlessness; it calls for honesty, trust when afraid, and compassion for human frailty.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| A secret fear long carried | When I am afraid, I put my trust in You (Psalm 56:3) |
| Flying talk coexisted with real trembling | We have this treasure in jars of clay (2 Corinthians 4:7) |
| Spouse knows the truth | Two are better than one (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10); bear with one another (Colossians 3:13) |
| Body reacts (knees, hands) | He knows our frame; we are dust (Psalm 103:14) |
| Fear may be “irrational” yet real | Perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18); courage is not denial (Joshua 1:9) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Afraid of heights

When I was on the observation deck at the Empire State building I had a secret that I should share with you. I have talked a lot about flying airplanes and used analogy after analogy involving flying and observing the earth from on high. My personal secret for many years (my wife knows it well) is that I have always been afraid of heights. If I get more than two steps off the ground on a stepladder my knees tremble and my hands shake. I know you may think it is a stupid thing to be nervous about being off good old terra firma, but heights affect me in different ways than most other folks.

> **Scholar sidebar — Clay jar with altitude metaphors**
> 2 Corinthians 4:7 and Psalm 103:14 underwrite the surprise: the man of flight analogies still trembles on a ladder. Psalm 56:3 frames fear as a place for trust, not a disqualifier. Dean’s “stupid thing” line anticipates shame — and refuses it by telling the truth. Later lessons show how thinking about solid connections calmed the deck; here the gift is honesty.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Secrets can serve readers.** He shares what long stayed private to humanize the counsel.
2. **Metaphor ≠ absence of fear.** Flying analogies did not cancel the trembling.
3. **Someone knew.** His wife knowing well models shared reality in marriage.
4. **Body tells the truth.** Knees and hands on a stepladder — concrete, not abstract.
5. **Don’t shame the fear.** He names the “stupid” judgment and still owns the affect.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Despite a book full of flying and high-view analogies, he has always feared heights — even a stepladder makes him tremble.

### Why does this belong in “Enjoy the Moment”?
Because landing after crisis includes facing fear honestly, then finding solid connection (next lessons) so relief can come.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Psalm 56:3** — When afraid, trust.
- **2 Corinthians 4:7** — Treasure in clay jars.
- **Psalm 103:14** — He knows our frame.
- **1 John 4:18** — Perfect love and fear.
- **Joshua 1:9** — Be strong and courageous.

### A simple practice
Name one “stepladder fear” you hide while teaching or helping others. Tell one safe person (as Dean’s wife knew). Pray Psalm 56:3 once aloud.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Was Dean afraid of heights? How does that fit his flying metaphors?* Keep stepladder and wife details exact.
