# First Takeoff New Vantage

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 30:** Go Farther with Less – Stretch Yourself to Finish Well

## Context for the Reader

This chapter’s stretch theme peaks in flight: the first takeoff when the instructor lets the student handle the controls. Familiar gauges suddenly make sense on the roll; lift-off opens a vantage life on the ground never gave — stretch into a new realm.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Scripture pairs new sight with leaving old ground — lifted perspective, freedom from bondage, and realizing more is available than the old horizon allowed.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| First handling of controls is pivotal | Taste and see (Psalm 34:8); come and see (John 1:46) |
| Something new and wonderful happens | New song (Psalm 40:3); new mercies (Lamentations 3:22–23) |
| Free of earth’s old boundaries | Free indeed (John 8:36); citizenship in heaven (Philippians 3:20) |
| New perspective on the terrain | Set mind on things above (Colossians 3:1–2); eagle’s wings (Isaiah 40:31) |
| Stretch opens a new realm for life | Old passed; new come (2 Corinthians 5:17); abundant life (John 10:10) |

## Dean's excerpt

### Rolling — lifting — flying free

One of the most exciting memories of learning to fly is the first takeoff where the instructor allows you to handle the controls. You sit through the familiarization of what all the essential gauges and controls do in flight, but it isn’t until you are rolling down the runway that you begin making sense of the apparatus in the cockpit. The airspeed gradually increases as the throttle is pushed in for the takeoff. The airplane lurches forward and as it accelerates the instructor tells you to gently begin pulling back on the control yoke. As the air over the surfaces of the elevator at the rear of the airplane moves swiftly enough to pressure the surface, you feel the nose of the machine begin to rise. Something new and wonderful is about to happen. The instructor tells you to maintain that angle and the bird gently lifts off the ground and, suddenly, you are flying off the runway. You feel like a bird. You are free of the boundaries of earth and you can see the beauty of the terrain below from an entirely new perspective. You are flying free of all the perspectives you have relied on throughout your life and can now realize that there is much more to see and explore from this new vantage point. You have stretched yourself to find a new realm for life: the world of flight.

> **Scholar sidebar — Vantage is the gift of stretch**
> Dean’s runway sequence is experiential theology of stretch: practice on the ground, then real airspeed, gentle input, lift, new sight (Colossians 3:1–2; Isaiah 40:31). “Flying free of all the perspectives you have relied on” is not contempt for the past; it is admission that crisis-and-growth open sight you could not have from the old altitude. Keep wonder attached to *trained* takeoff, not reckless leap.

## Takeaways

1. **Hands-on makes the gauges make sense.** Runway roll teaches what classroom cannot.
2. **Gentle back-pressure, maintained angle.** Stretch is controlled, not yanked.
3. **Lift-off is sudden after gradual build.** Airspeed first; then flight.
4. **New vantage redefines the terrain.** Beauty and options appear from above.
5. **Stretch found the realm of flight.** The chapter thesis in one takeoff.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
The first student takeoff turns familiarization into flight — free of earth’s boundaries, new vantage, proof you stretched into a new realm.

### Why is this more than a flight story?
Because Dean explicitly names it as stretch into a new realm *for life* — the marathon inch in aviation form.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Isaiah 40:31** — Mount up with wings like eagles.
- **Colossians 3:1–2** — Seek and set minds on things above.
- **2 Corinthians 5:17** — New creation.
- **John 8:36** — Free indeed.
- **Psalm 34:8** — Taste and see.
- **John 10:10** — Life abundant.

### A simple practice
Identify one “runway roll” you are already in (training, counseling, repentance, new skill). Name the gentle next input — not a yank — that maintains the climb angle this week.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What does Dean say about the first takeoff? What new perspective does flight give? How does takeoff illustrate stretch?* Keep vantage-and-realm primary.
