## Context for the Reader

This is the chapter’s signature practical lesson: stretch one inch per step and the marathon shortens by almost three-quarters of a mile in strides. Dean moves from dread of “not enough steps” to quantified hope — small stretch, massive cumulative gain.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Scripture honors small faithful increments that compound — little by little, day by day, not despising small beginnings when the long race is still ahead.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Stretch leaves comfort for a new realm | Step out at His word (cf. Matthew 14:29); walk by faith not sight (2 Corinthians 5:7) |
| Fear of not enough energy for the distance | My grace is sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9); strength to the weary (Isaiah 40:29–31) |
| Partner counsel: stretch the stride | Plans by counsel (Proverbs 15:22); faithful are the wounds of a friend (Proverbs 27:6) |
| Small percent compounds over distance | Little by little (Exodus 23:30); do not despise small beginnings (Zechariah 4:10) |
| Same steps, farther reach | Redeem the time (Ephesians 5:15–16); make the most of each step of obedience |

## Dean's excerpt

### Stretch one inch — save nearly three-quarters of a mile

Stretching takes you from where you may feel comfortable to where you step out to an entirely new, unknown realm in life. When I was training for the long run, I complained to my training partners one day that I wasn’t sure I had energy to take enough steps to finish the race. I began to think there was not enough energy to go the distance and complete the 26.4 miles of the marathon. I dreaded thinking of having to run that far. One of the guys I was training with told me to stretch my strides so I could take the same number of steps but go farther. I quantified that statement and attempted to change my stride in the following manner:

1. If my strides were 1 yard in length (36 inches long) and I increased the length of the stride by 1 inch it would be a three percent increase in distance of each step. That small increase would save me more than 140 yards/“steps” in each mile.
2. 140 steps in each mile x 26.4 miles = 3,668 strides saved during the entire race by stretching one inch. That translated to saving almost three quarters of a mile in strides for the 26.4-mile distance.

> **Scholar sidebar — Compounded faithfulness**
> The counsel is relational (Proverbs 15:22) before it is mathematical. Dean’s fear is energy-accounting; the partner reframes distance-per-step. Zechariah 4:10 and Exodus 23:30 underwrite small increments that matter over a long course. In crisis counsel, the transfer is: one inch of stretch in habit, honesty, prayer, or boundary — repeated — changes the whole “race,” not a single dramatic leap.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Stretch exits comfort.** New realm is unknown by definition.
2. **Dread counts steps and finds them short.** Energy anxiety is honest in long races.
3. **Partner wisdom: lengthen the stride.** Same step count, more ground.
4. **One inch ≈ three percent.** Small change, measurable per-mile savings.
5. **3,668 strides ≈ three-quarters of a mile.** Cumulative stretch is the point of the chapter.

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
By stretching each stride one inch he would save more than 140 steps per mile and about 3,668 strides across 26.4 miles — nearly three-quarters of a mile.

### Why quantify the counsel?
Because dread is vague; numbers make a tiny stretch feel real enough to train.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Zechariah 4:10** — Do not despise the day of small things.
- **Exodus 23:30** — Little by little.
- **Isaiah 40:29–31** — Strength to the weary; run and not be weary.
- **2 Corinthians 12:9** — Grace sufficient in weakness.
- **Proverbs 15:22** — Counsel establishes plans.
- **Ephesians 5:15–16** — Walk wisely; redeem the time.

### A simple practice
Pick one recovery habit. Increase it by a literal “one inch” (five more minutes of prayer, one harder honest sentence, one extra page of budget truth) daily for two weeks. Log the cumulative effect.

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *What is the one-inch stride lesson? How many strides did Dean calculate saving? Who gave him the counsel?* Keep the numbered math primary.
