# Altitude Converts to Range

**Author:** Dean Rush
**Book:** *Flying Free* · **Chapter 31:** Maximize Your Range – Convert Attitude to Altitude!
**Full book:** [deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md](https://deanrush.net/downloads/flyingfreebook.md)

## Context for the Reader

This chapter ties the aviation metaphor tight: altitude gives a pilot options when power fails; a faithful positive attitude gives a person options when life fails. This lesson holds only the opening equation — altitude’s three gifts and the attitude parallel.

> Voice note: Everything under **Dean's excerpt** is Dean's original prose (lightly cleaned only). Sections marked **Biblical foundations**, **Scholar sidebar**, **Takeaways**, and **First-time learner** are enrichment for Asker / first readers — not Dean speaking.

## Biblical foundations (preface)

Height of perspective, reserve for trouble, and efficiency for the long haul are spiritual as well as aeronautical — set the mind above, store wisdom before the day of adversity, run with endurance.

| Dean's claim | Scriptural undercarriage |
| --- | --- |
| Altitude is a great asset | Wisdom is better than weapons of war (Ecclesiastes 9:18); understanding gives strength |
| Converts to gliding distance in engine loss | The prudent sees danger and hides himself (Proverbs 22:3); reserve in the day of trouble (Proverbs 21:31 framed as preparation) |
| Greatest view of terrain | Set minds on things above (Colossians 3:1–2); from the end of the earth I call (Psalm 61:2) |
| Efficiency for longer distances | Run with endurance (Hebrews 12:1); redeem the time (Ephesians 5:15–16) |
| Attitude can supply the same advantages | As a man thinks (cf. Proverbs 23:7 in classic counsel use); be transformed by renewed mind (Romans 12:2) |

## Dean's excerpt

### What altitude gives — what attitude can mirror

One of the greatest assets to a pilot is altitude because it can be converted to gliding distance in case of engine loss. Altitude provides the greatest view of the terrain below, and it provides for the greatest efficiency for engine operation so you can fly longer distances. When we go through a crisis our attitude can provide the same advantages to us as altitude provides to a pilot.

> **Scholar sidebar — Options are altitude**
> Dean’s three gifts of altitude — glide range, view, efficiency — map cleanly to crisis: time/options when “power” fails, wider sight, stamina for distance (Colossians 3:1–2; Hebrews 12:1; Proverbs 22:3). Attitude is not denial; it is the convertible asset. Keep the engine-loss image: you build altitude *before* the failure if you can.

---

## Takeaways

1. **Altitude is convertible.** It becomes distance when the engine quits.
2. **Altitude is sight.** Best view of what is below and ahead.
3. **Altitude is efficiency.** Longer range on the same fuel of life-energy.
4. **Crisis needs the same three.** Options, perspective, endurance.
5. **Attitude is the parallel asset.** Dean’s chapter thesis in one bridge sentence.

---

## First-time learner

### What is Dean saying in one sentence?
Altitude gives pilots glide range, view, and efficiency — and in crisis a right attitude can provide those same advantages.

### Why open with engine loss?
Because range matters most when power is gone; attitude’s value shows when life’s “engine” fails.

### Key verses to read with this lesson
- **Colossians 3:1–2** — Minds set above.
- **Hebrews 12:1** — Endurance for the distance.
- **Proverbs 22:3** — Prudent sees danger.
- **Romans 12:2** — Renewed mind.
- **Ephesians 5:15–16** — Walk wisely; redeem time.
- **Psalm 61:2** — Lead me to the rock higher than I.

### A simple practice
For one live crisis, score yourself 1–5 on options, perspective, and endurance. Name one attitude move this week that raises the lowest score (prayer, counsel, rest, truth-telling).

### How this feeds Ask Dean
Seed material for: *Why does Dean prize altitude? What three things does altitude give? How does attitude parallel altitude?* Keep the three-gift list primary.
