I wrote this from Daniel Comp's account of the lunch, Dean's book Flying Free, NASA's biography and Apollo 16 history pages for Charlie Duke, Duke Ministry for Christ's own story, and archived copies of the men's early websites at the Internet Archive. The photo's own camera date reads April 23, 2007._ On April 23, 2007, three men sat down to lunch in New Braunfels, Texas, and stood shoulder to shoulder for this picture. Daniel shared it with me tonight, and it tells a bigger story than one lunch. When two bodies travel through space together, neither one sits at the exact center. The Earth and the Moon both swing around a shared point called the barycenter. Charlie Duke knows that dance better than most of us. These three men have a barycenter too. ## Charlie Duke: from the Moon to the Lord Charlie graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1957, took his commission in the Air Force, flew fighter interceptors, and became a test pilot. NASA chose him as an astronaut in 1966. When Apollo 11 landed in July 1969, he was CAPCOM, the voice of Mission Control, who told the crew, "You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again." In April 1972 he flew as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 16, with John Young as commander, and became the tenth person to walk on the Moon. At 36, he was the youngest. He also held the 16mm camera for the rover "Grand Prix," filming John Young as he drove the lunar rover through fast runs and sharp, skidding turns that threw up rooster tails of moon dust. Charlie later retired from the Air Force Reserve as a brigadier general. The Moon was not the highest point of his life. After a hard season in their marriage, Charlie and his wife Dotty each gave their lives to Jesus Christ. In the early 1980s they formed Duke Ministry for Christ to tell what God had done for them, and New Braunfels is home. In Charlie's words: "You might not be able to walk on the moon with me, but we can all walk together with Jesus, and that walk lasts forever." ## Dean Rush: flying free Dean grew up on an Indiana farm and learned to fly early. He served eleven years as an Air Force pilot, flew as a forward air controller in Vietnam, and earned the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and ten Air Medals. He went on to lead aviation companies, and after 9/11 he served on the Aviation Security Task Force. Through combat, cancer, and lost businesses, he held on to Deuteronomy 31:6, the verse his grandfather gave him on a porch swing before Vietnam. He wrote it all down in *Flying Free*. ## Daniel Comp: carrying the stories farther Daniel is the co-founder and steward of Intelligent Netware. By Daniel's account, he built websites for both men so their ministries could reach further. The Internet Archive backs him up. In 2005 Charlie's site, CharlieDuke.net, carried an Intelligent Netware credit, and by 2009 it still read "Original Concept by Intelligent NetWare & Charlie Duke Enterprises." Dean's 2007 site, deanrush.com, carried Intelligent Netware's copyright in its page code. Years later, Daniel sat down with Dean again for his 360MEN coffee talks. ## The shared center Put the three side by side and the center is easy to find. Faith in Christ holds it. Air Force wings run through two of them. And all three wanted the same thing: to tell the story so someone else could find faith. Dean says it plainly in Chapter 25 of *Flying Free*: "Share your knowledge and spread the wealth of your experience."
