### Context for the Reader

This chapter introduces the concept of **perspective as a survival tool**. When you are on the ground in crisis, your view is limited. When you climb higher — spiritually, emotionally, or relationally — you see options that were previously hidden. The chapter sets up the transition into Section II: Take Proper Action.

The eagle sees the world from an untethered perspective as it soars above the earth. Conversely, our view is limited to an earthbound view, often limited by other people, trees, and buildings. The eagle is free in flight to turn, dive, or climb to expand its view to see a wider spectrum of the world around.

Consider what it must be like to fly like an eagle. Soaring in the air must be very gratifying, seeing the world from such a great perspective. The eagle’s life in the air is very satisfying because it sees the world from a higher viewpoint. The eagle sees the world from on top. We observe our environment from ground level. There is a freedom for the eagle that is unknown to those of us tied to the earth. They have the ability to turn, swoop and expand their vision to obtain the maximum perspective of the world. I envy their viewpoint because they have a more expanded perspective that allows them to see a broader view of the world.

If we can seek to expand our view of the world, our chances of survival also increase dramatically. By taking an opportunity to slow down, look at our alternatives, and determine a correct action to react to a crisis, we increase our perspective; similar to the eagle, we develop increased objectivity. When we do not attempt to enlarge our viewpoint on a problem, the solution is often obscured by our existing knowledge and point of view.

The eagle illustrates the ultimate example of the freedom that comes with flight, but their ability to look over their immediate horizon to determine the potential for the future is one of their greatest assets. The higher you fly the more earth you can see. The eagle depicts that freedom of movement and expanded perspective that provides them an added ability to survive and survey the earth below. The eagle has predators who would like nothing better than to see them as prey but somehow they seem to remain above the fray of the world’s chaos. In flight the eagle can watch for those enemies by examining their environment from the greatest advantage. They survive as the predator and not the prey.

When we are living our lives each day we are also attempting to survive, expand our vision, and adapt to our environment. It is important to take a step away or to another level to gain the best perspective regarding our situation and vulnerabilities. We survive best when we are aware of our surroundings.

After leaving the military, I was involved in wide-ranging aspects of private and commercial aviation. The aviation industry is relatively small, and aircraft operations are often a reflection of changes in the economy. Profit margins are driven by management’s ability to respond to consumer demand. One of my bosses, Robert Anderson, former president at AMR Combs, the general aviation division of American Airlines, once told us in a managers’ meeting that we were part of a survival industry. He described aviation as “the end of a dog’s tail.” It moves before the rest of the world’s economy even flinches. We often saw people move from one job to another in the business because of the economic variance. The industry reacted to economic matters before there would be change in the rest of the financial community. We in the aviation industry had to be ready to move our assets in a direction to preserve them until a monetary crisis passed.
