summary: 'Randy reads back Dean Rush''s 2018 360MEN coffee talk with Daniel Comp like a flight log. Dean
tells how hired men baling hay on his family''s farm taught him basketball because his father wanted
his children to go to college, and how the game taught him team dynamics. Flying Free Chapter 14, ''Think
Straight,'' tells the inside story: anger after his father''s death, a teacher''s advice, and Romans
12:12, after which Dean ''began playing it as if my life depended upon it.'''
keypoints:
- Dean's father wanted his children to go to college; between loads of hay, hired men taught the boys
  basketball.
- 'A college scholarship and tryouts at the next level followed: ''I could shoot the ball really well...and
  I could take abuse.'''
- 'Basketball taught Dean team dynamics, which he later taught as Organizational Behavior; his mission:
  get Christ into the workplace.'
- 'Flying Free Chapter 14: after his father died, anger stalled Dean until a teacher said, ''Don''t waste
  your life being angry.'''
- 'Romans 12:12 (NIV): ''Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.'' Dean ''began
playing it as if my life depended upon it.'''
- 'At each turn someone took time to pass something on: hired men, a teacher, teammates.'

# Playing As If His Life Depended on It: Dean Rush on Basketball, Read Back Like a Flight Log

In April 2018 Daniel Comp welcomed his friend of fifteen years, Dean Rush, into his Airstream in Katy, Texas, for the 360MEN series "Mugshots and Coffee." Daniel asked Dean to talk about playing basketball when he was young. What came out was a story about a farm, a father, and a game that shaped the rest of Dean's life.

This is a flight-log read-back: what Dean said over coffee, what he wrote in his book, *Flying Free*, and the verse that ties the two together.

## Hay and hoops

Dean grew up on a farm. His father died when Dean was in his teens, but before he died he had a hope for his children: that they would go to college. No one in the family ever had.

So, Dean says, his father hired men to bale hay in the summer, and between loads those men taught the boys to play basketball. "That's really the time in my life we became enthralled with being better and better and trying to discipline myself to be able to do something later on."

It worked. Dean earned a scholarship and played college ball for four years. Then he went after the next level, tryout after tryout. He tells it with a grin: "I could shoot the ball really well, I could handle the ball really well, and I could take abuse." His nose, he says, has the history to prove it.

Basketball gave him more than games. On one team trip, on a flight to an exhibition game, he met a flight attendant who seemed to enjoy basketball. They married, and at the time of the talk they had been married about fifty-one years. Most of all, the game taught him team dynamics. "I love the teams that actually use the team not individuals." At the time of this talk, Dean was teaching Organizational Behavior at Liberty University, and he told Daniel his mission plainly: "My mission in life at my age is to get Christ into the workplace."

## What the interview leaves out

In the coffee talk, his father's death takes one sentence. In *Flying Free*, Chapter 14, "Think Straight," Dean tells the rest.

His father died while Dean was in high school and missed his senior season, the year Dean had looked forward to all through school. Dean was angry and didn't know at whom. He blamed the stress of farming. He blamed himself. He even blamed his love of basketball, because his father had given things up so he could practice and play. "Anger overwhelmed me to the point that I stopped progressing in school, in my spiritual life, and even in basketball."

Then a teacher who had known his father pulled him aside. Dean says that teacher had never seen his father angry at anyone, and he passed on the same advice: "Don't waste your life being angry." Dean writes, "That teacher could have walked away and never said those words to me."

Dean began to remember his father's words instead: he could go to college if he developed his basketball skills and earned a scholarship. And something changed. "I did not just play basketball to enjoy the game. I instead began playing it as if my life depended upon it."

## The verse

In that same chapter Dean quotes the verse that turned the corner for him:

> "Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer." (Romans 12:12, NIV)

"Paul had it right," Dean writes. When anger comes, "Look beyond the problem and concentrate on hope." He calls it a recipe, and he says from experience that it works.

## Reading it back

Lay the three side by side and the flight log tells a fuller story than any one of them alone:

- **The talk** gives the outside of the story: hay wagons, a scholarship, tryouts, a team.
- **The book** gives the inside: a grieving, angry teenager who almost quit.
- **The verse** gives the turn: hope, patience, and prayer, set toward a goal beyond the loss.

Notice who shows up at each turn. Hired men who took time between loads of hay. A teacher who didn't walk past an angry kid. Teammates who taught Dean, as he puts it, that "the people around me were teaching me about life." None of them were famous. Each one passed something on.

That's the same thing Dean was doing in Daniel's Airstream, and what he means by team dynamics and by getting Christ into the workplace. "You can't do it alone," he told Daniel. If you're carrying anger over a loss right now, Dean's recipe is simple: be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer, and pick a goal worth playing for as if your life depended on it.
