summary: 'Randy reads back Dean Rush''s 2018 360MEN coffee talk with Daniel Comp like a flight log, lining
up the interview, Flying Free, and Scripture. Dean''s three lessons he wished his father had taught
him: courage, from the porch-swing moment before Vietnam when his grandfather asked ''Are you afraid?''
and gave him Deuteronomy 31:6 (Flying Free Chapter 4), to which Dean adds his own words, ''Even in the
face of your enemy''; empowerment, from Luke 9 and 10; and listening, learned from a demanding charter
customer in Grand Rapids (Chapter 6).'
keypoints:
- Dean's father died when Dean was a teenager; Daniel asks for three lessons Dean wishes his father had
  taught him.
- 'Lesson 1, courage: on his grandfather''s porch swing before Vietnam, Grandpa Rush asked ''Are you afraid?''
Dean said yes (Flying Free, Chapter 4).'
- 'Deuteronomy 31:6 (NIV): ''Be strong and courageous...he will never leave you nor forsake you.'' Dean
adds his own words: ''Even in the face of your enemy.'''
- 'Chapter 4''s dark-room exercise: one beam of light gives a reference; the verse became Dean''s instrument
  when the horizon disappeared.'
- 'Lesson 2, empowerment: Luke 9 and 10, Jesus sends out the Twelve and then seventy-two to proclaim and
heal; empowering others empowered Dean too.'
- 'Lesson 3, listening: a demanding charter customer in Grand Rapids asked only to be heard; within three
months the hangars were full (Chapter 6 tells of the move north).'

# Be Strong and Courageous: Dean Rush's Three Life Lessons, Read Back Like a Flight Log

After a hard string of flights, a good pilot sits down with the logbook and reads it back. Where was I? What did I see? What held? This is that kind of read-back for one of Dean Rush's coffee talks with Daniel Comp.

In May 2018, in Cinco Ranch, Texas, Daniel sat down with Dean for the 360MEN series "Mugshots and Coffee." He asked a simple question: what three things do you wish your father had told you when you were younger? Dean's father died when Dean was a teenager. "There was a void in my life there," Dean said, and he found those lessons later, the hard way. Here they are, read alongside his book, *Flying Free*, and the Scripture he has carried for more than fifty years.

## The porch swing

The first lesson came on the way to Vietnam. Dean and his wife, Vickie, stopped at his grandfather's farm. Grandpa Rush had become his mentor, and the porch swing was where the real talks happened. That day Grandpa asked one question: "Are you afraid?"

In the talk Dean says he had to be honest: "Yes, I guess I am." In *Flying Free*, Chapter 4, "Check Your Instruments," he tells the same moment in writing: "I could never lie to my grandfather and my answer was simply, 'Yes.'" The book adds what he was really afraid of: "I was simply afraid of not finishing life correctly."

Grandpa got up, went into the house, came back with his Bible open, and asked Dean to memorize one verse.

## The verse

> "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." (Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV)

Dean adds his own words to it: "Even in the face of your enemy."

That line is Dean's, not part of the verse, but it is true to it. In the NIV, "them" means the enemy nations Israel was about to face across the Jordan. Dean says so himself in Chapter 4: "God is with you in the face of an enemy or enemies (the 'them' referred to in the verse)." He says it aloud the same way in this coffee talk. And in Chapter 6, remembering the hardest drive of his life, he writes that God was with him, "…even in the face of my enemies…."

In the talk Dean sets the scene from Deuteronomy: Moses, near the end of his life, handing command to Joshua before the crossing. Then he lists where the verse has gone with him since: combat, serious cancer, a heart problem, money trouble. "I've always reverted back to thinking about that verse." The book says the same: "That little verse has had many applications for me and I suggest you also memorize it."

## Instruments in the dark

Here is where the flight log gets interesting. Chapter 4 doesn't stop with the verse. Dean describes a pilot-training exercise in a totally dark room. The trainees stumbled around with nothing to go by, until an instructor let in one tiny beam of light across the ceiling. "Once the very tiny beam of light presented itself in the room the environment changed completely."

That is what Deuteronomy 31:6 has been for Dean: one reliable reference when the horizon disappears. A pilot in cloud learns to trust his instruments over his feelings. Dean learned to trust a promise over his fear.

## Two lessons about people

Dean's second and third lessons came later, in the corporate world, and the same verse sits quietly underneath them.

After a promotion at AMR Corporation, the parent company of American Airlines, Dean faced seven full chairs outside his office every day, each person wanting him to decide things about places he had never seen. His assistant brought in her well-used Bible and opened it to Luke 9 and 10, where Jesus sends out the Twelve "to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick" (Luke 9:2, NIV) and then sends out seventy-two more (Luke 10:1). Dean took it as a lesson in empowerment: "I found out quickly by empowering I was empowering myself too."

The third lesson is simply listening. Earlier, after cancer, Dean had started over at the lowest level, managing a small fixed-base operation in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Chapter 6 of *Flying Free* tells of that cold December drive north, toward "the only job I had been offered in nearly two years." In the talk, Dean remembers a demanding charter customer there who threatened to leave almost every day. Dean gathered his team, invited the man to lunch, and asked what it would take to keep his business. The answer: "please, please just listen." Within three months, Dean says, the hangars were full.

## Reading it back

Put the three side by side, the talk, the book, and the verse, and a pattern shows. Dean's courage didn't come from being fearless. It came from admitting fear on a porch swing and then trusting the One who goes with us. Empowerment and listening grow from the same root. A leader who knows God is with him doesn't have to know everything or win every argument. He can give the work away. He can sit still and listen.

That's a lesson worth passing to sons and grandsons, which is exactly what Dean was doing over coffee that day.
