### Transcript

[6s] it is a privilege and a pleasure to be here with you and you allowing me to share some of my story. I am 61 years old and moved to Texas in 1997. We got here as quick as we could. We moved here from Mobile, Alabama—that’s my hometown, born and raised—and just very blessed and fortunate to have had the opportunity to move to Katy, Texas 23 years ago and start Katy Auto Care from scratch. It’s just been a blessing and a great, great adventure.

[53s] Then I came to Christ as a boy. I remember hearing the preacher preaching and we need to invite Jesus into our hearts, but the most important thing I remember is Mom or Dad along the way. I asked him one time, you know, what does that mean and what should I do, and they said, well, one day Jesus will speak to your heart. And I think that time happened. It began kind of one day and then one night I remember as a 10-year-old boy calling my mom into the bedroom and saying, I think Jesus is speaking to my heart. And of course they did what all parents knew to do back in 1968—they called the preacher. So I remember visiting with our pastor.

[1m 46s] I’ve always liked to answer that question as I have a business that is owned by a Christian. I am the sole proprietor here at Katy Auto Care, have been from the beginning. And as a believer I have the privilege to run an automotive repair and service company and to say that it’s a Christian business—I’m sure it is—but I like to use the term it’s a business owned by a Christian, which in turn kind of gives it the whole atmosphere, the attitude, the influence that yes, it is a Christian business.

[2m 29s] The question is a very interesting question. I’ll be honest with you, I have never thought about how I can integrate Christ into Katy Auto Care. Christ is my life, my world. I think that because Christ is about me and what I do and how I live, then it’s automatically my business. My business is to repair and service cars, but being a person that has Christ first in his heart and life, it’s not integrated—it is me, it’s what I do, it’s who I am, it’s just what we are about. And so it’s just a blessing. It’s a lot of fun for me to have conversations with customers about their faith, their walk. Believe it or not, even politics—I love to have these discussions because I’m a very tolerant person and I’m not here to judge or debate. I’m here to hear your story. I love story and I love hearing my customers’ stories, their walk, their faith, their life. I love sharing with them my story, and my story is always about Jesus and who he is and what he’s done in my heart and life.

[4m] I’ve had all kinds of conversations with customers throughout my 23 years. I have had some who have just plain out said, “I’m not interested in faith,” and to which I respond with a smile, “Man, I respect that, but if you ever need anyone to talk to, you know where I’m at. I would love to talk to you.” And then I’ve had a lot of conversations with customers who maybe are not of the Christian faith, maybe they have another book that they lean to, whereas we lean to the Scriptures, God’s Word. Maybe they have other persuasions. I enjoy those stories just as well, but I can always say with a smile on my face, “You know, we may disagree and we do disagree, but I want you to know I care about you and love you and I sure appreciate your business.”

[5m 7s] I would have to say that if I had a scripture it’s a go-to for me because I have not always as a believer—there have been times, weeks, months, years of my life that I wasn’t necessarily living what you would call the way a believer lives. And I’ve had the opportunity to go back and put a lot of hurt and brokenness in my past, put a lot of meaning to my story. I have struggled with addictions, I have struggled with other things in my heart and life as a believer. And for the past, going on eight years now, it’s been a wonderful journey of recovery and healing, a restoration for my life, let’s just put it that way. So yes, I mean to have this opportunity to have this story, to be a part of what God has done and is doing in my heart and life going forward. I know that God will continue to use us and continue to use Katy Auto Care.

[6m 13s] I think it’s a great question to Dean and I need to finish the previous question with my scripture. It’s Matthew 6:33: “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and everything else will take care of itself and all these things will be added to you.” Dean, I’ve just felt like that if I can put Christ and his kingdom, his ways, his wishes, his word first, that everything else will take care of itself.

The transcription includes some minor transcription artifacts (e.g., “ninis of privilege,” “QDRO care,” “Anessa,” “KT auto care”) that appear to be auto-generated speech-to-text errors for names like “Katy Auto Care.” The core content is a personal testimony from Gil Harris about his faith journey, business (Katy Auto Care), and integrating Christian values through example rather than overt preaching.
